Artist Showcase – Francisco Uviña

About the Artist
Francisco Uviña Contreras was born in 1970 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México, and grew up in Sunland Park, New Mexico. He received his Bachelor of Art in Architecture with a Minor in Art History from the University of New Mexico in 1994, and is currently working towards a Masters in Architecture.

Francisco has been the Architectural/Technical Coordinator for Cornerstones Community Partnerships for 6 years. Cornerstones is a not-for-profit organization based in Santa Fe that works in partnership with communities to restore historic structures, encourage traditional building practices, and reinforce cultural values. He lives in Albuquerque with his wife, Claudia and his 4-month old daughter, Amara Andrea.

This work represents a variety of media. Most of Francisco’s art revolves around his work with Cornerstones and the restoration of historic buildings, earthen architecture and traditional technologies. Included here are several architectural renderings and technical illustrations. The other works are from art classes in college, where he excelled. He gets his artistic and creative inclination from his father and deceased grandfather, all of whom are skilled blacksmiths. From his mother’s side, family unity and love of life have influenced his art. In “Vida y Muerte,” Francisco attempts to show a glimpse of his roots and culture, through a fighting cock and a “calaca,” or skeleton.

Growing up on the U.S./Mexico border has significantly influenced Francisco’s work. The border attracts many Mexican and foreign immigrants seeking to improve their lives and who bring with them their culture, ideas, and love for their homes and families. Like so many other border towns, Juárez is rich in that sense. However, this region has also become a breeding grounds for crime and injustice. Francisco has always wanted to produce a work that represents this dichotomy—but so far it only exists in his sketchbook.

Sobre el Artista
Francisco Uviña Contreras nació en 1970 en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México, y se crió en Sunland Park, Nuevo Méjico. Francisco recibió su Bachillerato en Arquitectura y una asignatura secundaria en Historia del Arte en la Universidad de Nuevo Méjico en 1994, y actualmente cursa sus estudios de pos grado para su maestría en arquitectura.

Francisco ha sido el Coordinador Técnico/Arquitectonico para Cornerstones Community Partnerships durante seis anos. Cornerstones es una organizacion no-gubernamental situada en Santa Fe que trabaja en compañerismo con las comunidades para restaurar monumentos históricos, promover prácticas constructivas tradicionales, y fortalecer valores culturales. El vive en Albuquerque con su esposa, Claudia y su hija de cuatro meses de edad, Amara Andrea.

Su trabajo representa una variedad the técnicas. La mayor parte del arte que Francisco ha creado se basa en su trabajo con Cornerstones en la restauración de los inmuebles, la arquitectura de tierra y técnicas tradicionales de construcción. Adjunto se incluyen varios bosquejos arquitectónicos e ilustraciones técnicas. El resto, sus pinturas en particular, se realizaron durante sus clases universitarias en donde sobresalió. Su creatividad artistica nace de su Padre, y su difunto Abuelo, quien ambos han trabajado la herreria forjada. Por parte de su Madre, la unidad de la familia y el amor a la vida ha influido en su arte. En la pintura “Vida y Muerte,” Francisco nos ilustra su cultura y sus raices a través de una pelea de gallos y la “calaca” (la muerte).

Haberse creado en la frontera de Méjico y Estados Unidos ha influido significativamente su trabajo. La frontera atrae a muchos inmigrantes mexicanos y extranjeros buscando mejorar sus vidas y quienes traen consigo su cultura, ideología y amor hacia el hogar y la familia. Como muchas ciudades fronterizas, Juarez es rica en este sentido. Sin embargo esta region se ha convertido en suelo fértil para el crimen y la injusticia. Francisco siempre ha sentido la necesidad de representar esta dicotomía—pero desaforntunadamente solo existe en su cuaderno de bosquejos.
