Poetry Webslam III

New mexico Culturenet
WebSlam III Rules and Procedures

WHAT:

  1. Teams of 4-6 high school students, with one coach (who usually is their English teacher), will write one poem per student per week, for three weeks, these in response to a prompt, or "Volley," posted to the CultureNet web site each Monday morning. You can see what WebSlam looked like last year by going to http://www.nmculturenet.org/projecty/poetry/webslam.

  2. Participating teams have 72 hours (until Thursday afternoon) to write and submit their poems to CultureNet. The judges have until the following Monday noon to read, score, and comment on the poems. NOTE: scores and comments appear on our Website--teachers LOVE the comments. The process is repeated over the following 2 weeks, with winners--3 individuals and 1 team--announced at the end of the final week. WHEN:
MON. Oct. 30 - 1st Volley posted to the CultureNet Web site
THU. Nov. 2 - Round 1 poems due by 4:00 PM

MON. Nov. 6 - 2nd Volley posted to the CultureNet Web site
THU. Nov. 9 - Round 2 poems due by 4:00 PM

MON. Nov. 13 - 3rd Volley posted to the CultureNet Web site
THU. Nov. 16 - Round 3 poems due by 4:00 PM

MON. Nov. 20 - 3rd Round scores in by noon; winners announced by 3:00 PM

DEADLINE for teams to enter: October 15, 2000

    WHO:

Teams consisting of 4-6 poets, with one or more coach, who is usually the English teacher, but does not have to be so. Each team member is expected to write 3 poems, one each week, for the duration of WebSlam.
    PROCEEDURES
    • Each poet is to choose one (only one) of the following volleys and respond to it.
    • Each poet must write a new poem each of the 3 weeks of WebSlam; no recycled past successes.
    • Volleys will be uploaded to the CultureNet Web site each Monday morning.
    • Poems must be received by the CultureNet staff (editor@nmcn.org) by 5:00 PM on Thursday of the same week; no late entries will be accepted.
    • The poems will be uploaded to the CultureNet Web site, along with scores and comments, by 3:00 PM the following Monday.
    • Winners (First, Second, and Third places) will be determined by the highest cumulative score. In other words, if a participant misses a week, it is highly unlikely that person's will be in the running to win a prize. Prizes have yet to be determined. In past years, they have been poetry CD-ROMs and special pens.
We honestly feel that all who participate in WebSlam are winners. We believe that you are part of a special community dedicated to self-expression, sharing, and appreciation of language and culture.

    Thanks for participating!

    JUDGING/SCORING:

The JUDGING will be Olympic style, with scores ranging from 1.0 - 10. Usually scores range from 7.5-9.5. JUDGES will be outstanding New Mexico poets who have donated their time to WebSlam. Thus far, the judges are E.A. (Tony) Mares, Rebecca Seiferle, and Consuelo Luz; we expect to have at least 3 more judges. Judges will make comments about each poem and these comments will be posted to the CultureNet web site.
    WINNERS:
There will be 3 winners of the individual competition and one team winner. Individual winners will be determined by cumulative scores. The winning team will be selected subjectively, by the CultureNet staff, in consultation with the judges. Prizes in the past have included poetry CDs and very special pens. The real prize, however, is your involvement and the wonderful poems and the chance to be "heard."
