Archive of New Mexico Poetry – Ruth Martinez

VIII

Sunset. I wade
through crisp sidewalk leaves.
Small birds sit
on a telephone wire,
like newsprint against
the orange and purple sky,
headlining our argument.
One by one they lift off,
launch themselves,
black pebbles thrown
against a cathedral window.
The wire vibrates.
Leaves crunch under shoes.
Will you still be there
when I get home?
