OVERVIEW OF “THE RIVER” SCIENCE STRAND:

            The science strand of “The River” curriculum is designed to be used in conjunction with the social studies and humanities strands.  Teams of teachers working with these materials may decide to delete certain activities or to supplement with other materials.  “The River” curriculum is interdisciplinary and flexible: individual teachers are encouraged to adapt it to student needs and to their own teaching goals.  The success of this curriculum hinges upon students becoming personally involved in what they are learning, and generally enjoying the process.  The goal of all three strands is to prepare students to understand the consequences of their actions and to participate in decision-making within their communities.

            Although the science strand takes about three weeks to complete in its entirety, it is designed to be adaptable to your teaching schedule.  The student’s science journal serves as a unifying thread for the daily lessons, and as an assessment tool to be used throughout the unit and/or upon completion.

            This packet of science materials is presented in a day-by-day format.  Each day’s lesson begins with an overview, which is followed by step-by-step procedures for teachers.  These segue into suggestions for alternative or supplemental activities, followed by notes for content discussion.  Appropriate handouts (which could also be used as transparencies) are included at the back of each day’s materials.
