THE
RIVER CURRICULUM:
WHAT
IS IT?
The language arts strand
of The River curriculum contains over 30 activities. These are
arranged contextually, rather than
sequentially. This order is intended as a metaphor for the
natural flow (meanderings, currents,
rapids, shallows, etc.) of a river. Each
class, in accordance with its particular
composition and interests, will use the
language arts strand differently.
WHY WAS IT DEVELOPED?
The language arts strand was created as an
engaging way of getting to know
the Rio Grande
River system. We hope that it will
stimulate students to frame their knowledge
and experience in creative ways.
WHAT IS THE PROGRESSION BETWEEN SECTIONS?
The sections of the language arts strand represent
a flexible progression through thought and
experience. Part #1 ("This is My River") evokes expressions of the learner's personal experience of the river.
Part #2 ("Exploring the River") is a creative investigation of the physical characteristics of the river and its
inhabitants. Part #3 ("River Stories") contains stories of river peoples and their cultures—it brings the community into the classroom, and the classroom into the community.
