Curriculum Unit on Identity

Emphasis of the Content

In agreement with the Southwest Museum's senior staff, and in consultation with educators at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, we decided that this curriculum unit would focus on Native American perspectives toward the Battle of Little Big Horn. Structurally, this meant that materials related to Custer would be given secondary positions (e.g., primacy among the "Source Links" goes to personal narratives of Lakota survivors).

Navigation strategy

Web links to external (non-Getty-hosted) resources are a key component of the curriculum unit. In order to make navigation easier, we decided that these links should automatically launch a separate Netscape browser window, in which the linked source would appear. In this way, the viewer could always maintain a visual "anchor" with the curriculum page, while browsing freely among the links.

Additionally, having multiple windows open simultaneously allows the viewer to compare two works of art, as suggested by several of the discussion questions and activities.
