Introduction


Chapter Summary

This chapter traces the Spanish exploration and settlement of the region which we now know as the Río Grande corridor. It also covers the Pueblo Revolt and subsequent Spanish re occupation, the blending of Spanish and Native American cultures, and the American occupation in the 1840s, as well as providing an overview of contemporary New Mexico. The chapter also contains a timeline of Hispanic settlement in New Mexico.



Lesson Plan Summary

Using clay, wood, sand, rock, salt dough and other materials, students are asked to work as a group in constructing a three-dimensional model of the original Hispanic settlements along the Río Grande. Accompanying the lesson plan is a vocabulary list of Spanish words for elements relating to the project. Specific related activities in math, language arts, and social studies are suggested under curriculum integrations. Look for bibliographies of books for adults and children as well as links to related WWW sites at our reference desk.
