"New Mexico is a unique state that has long celebrated its many cultures. Publications like this one will allow us to share information about some of these wonders with educators and many others. We hope the Hispanic Folk Arts and the Environment: A New Mexican Perspective curriculum will become an incentive for the development of more published information which will provide authentic pictures of a people and state full of cultural, artistic and linguistic heritage.

The New Mexico Department of Education thanks the Museum of New Mexico and the Museum of International Folk Art for including us in the development of this work."

Vicki Breen, Visual Arts Consultant, New Mexico Department of Education

"The state of New Mexico is perhaps the only state in the nation where several languages and cultures are part of a population mosaic which includes Native American, Hispanic, Anglo and other ethnic groups. It is also the only state where the Spanish language has been used continuously, and up to 1963 officially, since the early Spanish settlements were established after 1598. The seven Native American languages spoken in New Mexico continue to be integral to government, religion, and aspects of daily life for each tribe, and a command of the native language is generally expected and valued by elders of each of the tribes.

It is hoped that this publication, Hispanic Folk Arts and the Environment: A New Mexican Perspective, will serve all persons who read it well and at the same time awaken in them a curiosity for studying the subject more deeply. We as teachers need to be able to present ideas and concepts related to our Hispanic heritage which is so rich. The topics are relevant to the total educational experience the children should have in schools."
