Crinoline, Women's Underwear
Bell shaped, made of wire that is encased in twill cord. Vertrical
clothing strips support framework (studded)
Consists of 30 wire hoops, waist approx. 26 inches (adjustable); wire hoops
increasing in diameter down to hemline; hemline is 33 inches;
brass waist buckle embossed: "Pat. March 25, 1862".
Condition: Poor, fragile, old tape repairs, fabric support badly frayed and twill
cord over wire is missing in places
Period: 1860s
History: Acquired by Jean Moss of Santa Fe from the Santa Fe Community
Theater.
The steel-framed crinoline was invented in 1856; eventually it evolved
into the bustle of the 1870s.
